Top Soft Skills Recruiters Desperately Want You To Have, I presented the case with numbers and expert quotes and gave a long list of examples to inspire you for your next resume update. How many soft skills are mentioned in your latest resume? None explicitly 1-3 4-5 More than 5 View Results What I didn't say is exactly how to mention the soft skills, and one angry commenter took me to task for it:eval who cares if a resume matches a list of “soft skills?” Seriously, an employer can list 5, 10, 15, or all 140 of these skills in a job ad, and there will be hundreds (thousands?) of applicants who will simply paste them into their resume and send it in … irregardless of whether or not they actually have the skills. Employers looking for purple squirrels, applicants gaming the system, both sides shirking their duty and due diligence, each hoping to fake out the other. Seriously? I mean really, seriously? (I love getting comments like this, even if I don't always aim to rile people up. Well, not always ?? ) The commenter understood that I recommended putting a list of short skills directly in your resume. I responded to the commenter, and then decided to take it further:eval Maybe the recruiters reading your resume DO want such a list? Download it free now I asked recruiters about soft skills on your resume I reached out to over 200 recruiters with a Twitter poll. Not everyone responded but the results are still fascinating: Here are some of the recruiters' reactions to the poll: What this poll tells you While the results are close and aren't statistically significant, and regardless of how recruiters voted or reacted, there's still an important takeaway, the implied one: You must showcase your relevant soft skills on your resume, whether you list them explicitly or list top achievements that demonstrate those soft skills. My recommendation for you The poll and its responses show that unsurprisingly, different recruiters see things differently, and sometimes it may be industry-related. Tailoring your resume well requires first doing company research, and if your resume is going to be sent to one of the recruiters here above, you now know how to tailor it for them, at least with respect to soft skills. Otherwise, the most powerful yet simplest way to show someone you're listening is by repeating their own words back to them. If a job listing requires certain soft skills and you have stories and achievements to prove you have them, include those soft skills in your resume like any other requested qualifications. Include them word for word as much as it makes sense, especially if the recruiter may be using an ATS to scan candidate resumes for keywords. This doesn't mean, unlike what the angry commenter understood, that you should group them into a “Soft Skills” section of your resume, which is why it's not one of my recommended ?? 111 Helpful Resume Section Headings and Titles and never has been. That's “not a good use of space on a resume,” as Rebecca Warren tweeted. Instead, “address your proficiency” with the required soft skills, as Kristina Marlow tweeted, by highlighting them with “a listing of accomplishments that obviously would require the use of said skills,” as Michael G. Cox tweeted. The Post-Interview Questions You Shouldnt Forget to Ask Candidates The candidate you are representing has made it to interview stage. You made sure that you asked them all the preparation questions and they  seemed ready to go, ticking all of the boxes!  Now that theyre out of the interview youre keen to get all the details, right? Its important to have the candidate give you a call straight after the interview; this is a great test of commitment, as if they are interested in the company, they should give you a call immediately, full of excitement about the prospect of being successful! Its also  great to get feedback while its still fresh in their head! When they call make sure you ask approach the following topics: How do you feel it went? Its important to be able to have  an honest conversation between you and your candidate. Its unlikely that  during an interview a candidate will have answered every question perfectly and as a recruiter you know that the perfect candidate isnt out there! This  means that you need to be able to effectively feedback to the client and overcome their reservations by reassuring them that the candidate is competent in this area. If they didnt answer the question correctly get them to talk you through how they would have answered the problem and feed this back to the client. How  does it compare to your current role / company? Discuss the pros and cons of the candidate leaving vs. staying, hopefully the pros will far outweigh the cons but if it doesnt make sense to you then it probably doesnt make sense for the candidate to move either! If a candidate is torn you could get them to create a spreadsheet which encourages them to think about it in detail, they can rank areas of importance or split into pros/cons although its not ideal you need to know before generating an offer for the wrong candidate and risking a drop out further down the line! Do  you have any reservations? Make sure youve overcome these before delivering any offer to a candidate, you wont be able to close a candidate on accepting a position by strong handing them into it,  even if you do theres a high risk of the candidate dropping out as these reservations eat away at them over time. Better to ask  additional questions and gain flexibility from the end client  which you can incorporate into an offer. There are usually things that you can have added to an offer to get them across the line, simply by bringing them up with the hiring manager first (maybe another company is offering +5 days holiday allowance is this something your client can offer so they dont lose out on a great candidate?) What did  they say the next steps were? What did they tell you about  the next steps? Timeframes / other applicants in the process are good to know about and a good indication of how the candidate has done and should mirror your conversation/s with the client. How was your journey to the office? The interview could have gone well but if you dont know how this would work logistically then it could be a massive issue which crops up out of nowhere later down the line! If the journey wasnt great and theyre thinking of discounting the position based on this  get them to do it again if its still bad you can always speak to the client about the flexibility to work from home! How does it compare to other roles youre interviewing for? Make sure that the candidate isnt holding out for another role, especially if you have another person  in the running who would jump at the chance of joining the organisation! Whilst you want the best technical candidate, somebody who  is really fighting to get hired and has a great attitude could be  great for an organisation and I would usually push for this candidate ahead of a person who is better on paper. Additional questions you might like to ask: What reservations do you think they have about you at this stage? Can you talk me through the questions which they asked? How many other candidates are in the running? What did you think  about the company structure? Was there anything you could have answered better / feel you didnt address thoroughly? Were there any surprises about the role? What does your gut feeling tell you the outcome will be? Why do these questions matter? Effective questioning works two-fold. It helps you extract the relevant information to discuss with the client in order to sell the candidate effectively and it means that you can  use their feedback to gauge whether you need to address anything to the client on their behalf, i.e, they felt they could have gone into more detail about their sales methodology. If a candidate is interested in the company I would always recommend for  them to follow up with a personalised email to you  outlining what they liked about the role and what areas of expertise that they could bring to the company and sending this onto the client with a recommendation to offer. If they didnt answer a  question  as well as they could have get them to explain this, how they would have approached it and, if relevant get them to send through examples of their work this will really help them to stand out in comparison  to other candidates!

Either people dont do it, they do it wrong, or some combination of those two. Only a small number of savvy careerist get it! I recently ran one myself as the host, and I wanted to share all my lessons learned with you:What is an Instagram Loop Giveaway?There are a few forms of loop giveaways done on the web, but the kind I’ll explain below is the kind seen on Instagram.Basically, it’s when a few Instagram accounts (the “hosts“) get together, usually between 20-60 of them,  and come up with a prize of a group of prizes for the giveaway, and create a criteria for others (the “entrants”)  who want to be entered into the drawing in order to win.The way the hosts come up with prizes vary. It could be chipping in together and creating a pool of funds for one of the hosts to purchases the prizes. OR, it could be on a contribution basis, where some or all of the hosts contribute a product or something they don’t mind giving away.Why do people host Instagram Loop Giveaways?For the most part, it’s for the hosts to gain more followers.In my personal experience though, I hosted a loop giveaway to get to know other bloggers who blog about similar things. You see, my blog is about corporate fashion and workwear for professional women. When I created my loop giveaway, I teamed up with 18 other bloggers who blog about the same topic. The logic is that my audience would appreciate their content  and vice versa.How to get the biggest return from hosting Instagram Loop Giveaways?Full disclosure here â€"  I’ve hosted one loop giveaway myself and also participated in co-hosting of another. Each time I gained on average about 400 Instagram followers. About 50 or so I’d lose in the two weeks following the end of the giveaway. I’d also like to caveat these numbers with the fact that the total number of followers all the hosts have in accumulation didn’t exceed 50K either time.  I would imagine some of the loop giveaways with more powerful IGers would be more effective and fruitful.What makes a good Instagram loop giveaway?This section is intended for those of you who are thinking about creating a loop giveaway yourself. Many bloggers have covered on the logistics of how to carry out one, you can find some of the most popular ones on Tin Shingle, Blog Brighter, and Life by Lee.To me, the loop giveaways that stood out and piqued my interest always have two critical elements. 1. A carefully selected co-hosts with a unique focus and 2) a set of curated giveaway items. The concept here is similar to blogging 101, where they always tell you to know your audience. It’s the same thing when creating a loop giveaway. Because you want your audience to stick around for the long run, you want to target the right people. Teaming up with people that have similar topics in their content is the first step.
